How Did You Choose Your Treatment?
I went against my endo's recommendation and choose what I thought to be the least invasive drug with the fewest side effects after I was unable to take Fosamax. I am currently taking Evista, Ca and Vit D but I am scheduled for my second bone scan. I am hoping to have made progress but my doctor is not hopeful. He wants me to choose between Forteo and Tymlos. He says I am not building bone and these are the best options for this issue. I don't want to take any of these drugs because of all the… read more
I just came from my endocrinologist appt. I have finished 2 years of Prolia and have shown good growth. I wanted to stay off of meds and just use my bone supplements for 6 months to one year. My dr said NO! Evidently, when you stop Prolia you may develop compression fractures in your spine. She feels very strongly that I need Fosomex now and in 4 months I will have blood work and a urine test to make sure I'm absorbing it.
I walk every other day, weight lift every other and am going to PT for strengthening exercises. I'm pretty scared about my future- I'm 64. All I can do is what I'm doing and keep the faith :)
I would love this site to have a section for exercise and organized by which part of the body benefits most from that particular exercise. I am currently researching this with the goal of increasing bone density through nutrition and exercise. Falling and balance issues are indeed a concern so I’ve started keeping a journal of excerises for my own use.
I took Fosomax for many years (these drugs are called bisphosphonates) and developed osteonecrosis (death of bone) in my jaw. Don't take these drugs for more than 5 years. The drug companies won't tell you about this side effect.
Betsy, all the info I get about exercise is to go to a gym and work with a professional. At this point I decided to do more research. I used my library card and picked a book called Osteoporosis for dummies. I found the exercises I’m using now in that book. Sounds crazy but the weight training has been doable and useful.
Heĺlo, Jenifer!
My email notifications has just come up with your question but l realise this is some years old now! I do hope you have found a good solution. You are most welcome to read my story, but l will try to answer briefly here, as people are still replying.... l can hear the fear in others' stories, and l remember that feeling so well. I have approached my diagnosis and treatment from a "read the information and decide" angle, but it is hard to be rational and calm when you are in shock, and the doctors are speaking fearfully to us. Yes, this is a serious disease, and is life-altering, and needs to be treated and reversed asap, to prevent injury/further injury. But it is so hard to make a good decision out of care for ourselves, rather than stark fear, especially when the options presented are full of side effects than in a lot of cases would be worse than the disease! Bravo to those who have chosen to carry on with "no treatment", rather than go with the fear. After a couple of inexplicable fractures, and diagnosis of severe osteoporosis, I looked up osteoporosis on the internet at the library, which was my first time on a computer. I was so sickened by the side effects of the choices the doctor presented, l needed to know for myself where this disease was going, and whether there was any other option for treatment. I read a couple of articles on vitK2(7), sceptically, and couldn't believe that there was such an effective tretment available, yet my docs had never mentioned it. I have since questioned several doctors, and rhey know nothing of it: their training only covers pharma drug solutions. To make a long story short, l trialled it, along with the other bone-builders... calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, silica, vit D ...and at my next scan, had double the improvement expected of the recommended pharma drug. I have since added vit C. Despite doctors' desperate pleas (because l'm "not treating it"), l am getting stronger every day, all without their sad offerings. I continue to research, and weigh the evidence, avoiding those who are peddling thier own wares, and am happily side effect-free. Oh...except that K2(7) flushes calcium buildup from the heart and kidneys, and into the bone matrix, where it belongs, and also reduces wrinkles. So. No heart blockages for me. I can live with that, l think! And better skin, too? Yeah...😏 l add to that my walking 3x a week, and gentle gardening, and l am going well. My ex-fracture sites hurt when a weather change is coming, so l am a walking barometer. Hah! Love to you all. Do not be afraid of the disease itself. It only adds to your stress, and depletes your bone density in the end. Do your research, pray for guidance and discernment, and make good decisions. 🙂 ❤Bevx0
