That's a great question! The DEXA scan (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) is currently considered the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis and measuring bone mineral density. It's the most widely used and well-researched tool available.
The Echolight scan uses ultrasound technology and is radiation-free, which is appealing to many people. However, it's worth knowing that while it shows promise, it hasn't yet replaced DEXA as the primary recommended method by most medical guidelines.
Here's a quick comparison to keep in mind:
- DEXA scan – Gold standard, highly accurate, widely accepted by doctors, uses low-dose X-ray
- Echolight scan – Radiation-free, uses ultrasound, newer technology, not yet universally adopted in clinical guidelines
The best step would be to talk to your doctor about whether an Echolight scan would add value to your current bone health picture. Since you've already had a DEXA scan, your doctor can help interpret those results and decide if additional testing is needed.
It's always worth having that conversation — your bone health is worth every question!

For all of those who are over 65 with osteoporosis you can get a dexa scan every year. Also, you can get both hips done too. Fight your insurance company over it.

I have been having the Bone Density scan every 2years for quite some time now and previously I had a full body scan done and I think it is very similar to a Bone Density scan but it covers every bone and I’m curious to know if this is recommended for new patients with bone density issues which I have had done
Hugs from Judyxx in Queensland Australia and I have been taking the vitamin D 3 and vitamin K2 plus the calcium tablets for a few years now so I’m hoping that my next bone density test is showing improvement in my bone health

My Dr. Probably has heard of it and wouldn't understand it
