Thank you for your reply Birdlady. I am about to start Prolia, and always worrying about side effects. Hopefully I will be like you, and all will go well. Happy New Year to you as well. Love Ellieann

Personally I’m happy with the Prolia injections every 6 months with no problems with side effects and I take Vitamin D 3 1000iu every afternoon I take a K2 supplement every morning and every other day I take a calcium supplement which has extra vitamin D 3 and Magnesium in it and hope that this it is helping my bone density

I had many side effects from weekly tablets and the Fosamax Plus were very bad for my stomach

I have had 5 years of pamidronate fusions every three months. More recently I have had three years of Zolendronic Acid infusions one a year and my density in my spine increased 10%. Truthfully I found it very difficult. Pains that went on for three months post infusions. I have a burst disc and a trapped nerve. I have had three epidurals and one nerve root block in a space of six months. I am no better. I don’t understand why it is someone like me with osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis is not dealt with by way of a permanent solution as steroid injections are not doing any of my conditions any good. I am fed up. Tired of pain. Tired of medications. Tired of being afraid to wake up in the morning and being unable to put my foot on the floor because of the most horrendous trapped nerve pain and the stinging piercing pain of a burst disc. It happened on the 11th June 2025. They are hoping it will resolve itself! I feel totally neglected unheard and alone.

Is it advisable to have zoledronic acid infusions considering the side effects?

Zoledronic acid (a bisphosphonate given yearly by IV) can be an effective treatment for osteoporosis, but like all medications, it comes with potential side effects that you should weigh carefully with your doctor.

Common side effects of bisphosphonates include:
* Bone or muscle pain
* Gastrointestinal problems (though less common with IV forms)
* Flu-like symptoms after infusion

Rare but serious side effects include:
* Osteonecrosis (bone death) of the jaw, especially after dental surgery
* Atypical fractures of the thigh bone with long-term use

The good news is that patients who take bisphosphonates for extended periods are typically given temporary breaks (drug holidays) to help prevent these rare but serious side effects. However, it's important to know that during these breaks, fracture risk may increase, particularly in the fourth and fifth years.

Your decision should be based on your individual risk factors, bone density scores, and overall health. Many people find that the benefits of preventing fractures outweigh the potential side effects, but this is a personal choice best made with your healthcare provider's guidance.
