What Type Of Doctor Do You Go To For Osteoporosis? (after Diagnosed)

Pittsburgh, PA

I was diagnosed via a Dexascan by my GYN. She has since retired, and I would prefer someone who is trained in osteoporosis.

Members shared a wide range of specialists they see for osteoporosis treatment, with the most commonly mentioned being endocrinologists (especially those specializing in bone health), rheumatologists, and primary care physicians, while some also work with orthopedic specialists or pain clinics depending on complications like fractures. Several members described practical strategies that have helped them manage osteoporosis, including annual Reclast or Zolendronic acid infusions, daily Fosamax or Tymlos injections, working with personal trainers to build strength and balance, wearing abdominal support braces to stabilize the spine, and deep tissue massage for pain relief. A recurring theme was the frustration of finding knowledgeable doctors who take time to explain test results and treatment options, the challenge of managing overlapping conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia, and the growing recognition that diet, supplements, and lifestyle changes deserve more attention alongside prescription medications.

I was diagnosed after my spine basically collapsed with fractures at 59. Pain was unbearable. The fractures are treated by an orthopedic. Pain is treated at a pain clinic. I have had 2 series of nerve ablations. The attempt to improve bone strength is treated by an endocrinologist. I am currently on Tymlos injection once daily, and vitamin D, and thyroid and I take a lot of supplements. The thing that has helped me the Most is a personal trainer who specializes in working with stroke victims to rebuild strength. EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NOT HAD A STROKE, BUILDING STRENGTH AND IMPROVING BALANCE IS ESSENTIAL. I also have found wearing a heavy duty high rise GIRDLE or pull on Post Abdominal Surgical BRACE, all ordered from AMAZON, has provided the support to stabilize my spinal column during the day. This reduces my pain level from movement.
I wish you the best, hope this helps.

I see an endocrinologist for my osteopenia and take Fosamax. I wish they could also speak about supplements but they really don’t get into that

My primary dr( internal medicine) ordered the dexascan. He prescribed Alendronate, I didn’t tolerate the medicine. So have been referred to.a Rheumatologist. It will vary which dr treats you for it. Call your insurance company and ask who will treat in and when you can get appointments.
