Members shared mixed experiences with weighted vests for building bone density while walking or exercising, with opinions ranging from being told extra weight offers no benefit to believing it helps prevent osteoporosis from worsening, though most acknowledged it's hard to measure the direct impact. Several members emphasized starting with light weight and gradually increasing to avoid injury, with one sharing they developed back pain from wearing theirs too long initially, while others mentioned alternatives like hand weights, hip belts, and mini rebounders. A recurring theme was that walking itself is valuable for bone health, but members encouraged caution, especially for those with existing fractures, and suggested building tolerance slowly over time.

I agree that walking is very good for you. I walk everywhere because I don't drive. I also biked until about a year ago. I am 75 years old. I confess that I don't go to a gym, but, I do a lot of walking, especially in the spring, summer and fall. Right now, a couple of feet of snow on the ground...stay inside in lounging pyjamas. Just walking as far as the bathroom.

I have not used a weighted vest. I sometimes wear a hip belt to help my lower back.

I use a weighted vest. At my age I don't expect it to reverse Osteoporosis, I do believe it helps to prevent it getting worse. Be careful if you do use one. Depending if you have already had fractures, where they are etc. Start light and gradually increase the weight over time. It has the added bonus for me of burning more calories to keep my weight in check. xx

I bought a weighted best and was a bit overzealous and wore it for a couple hours the first couple days. My back hurt after that! I will try again but this time will set the timer for maybe 15 minutes and then build up to longer time. I would definitely not try to do a Zumba class for at least a couple of months until you get used to it.

I use hand weights, I'm afraid I would get too hot with a vest
