My mother had multiple kyphoplasties. I cannot spesk to the long term benefits or dangers (the long term impact on the bones) but it certainly provided her with pain relief that was notable and almost instantaneous. When she went in she screamed when we would ride over a bump in thecroad or she would move the wrong way. After the procedure she was able to move with much less pain and riding in the car was not a dreaded event.

I have read that kyphoplasty can weaken other bones around repaired vertebrae. Also, a recent article in The NY Times says research shows no improvement in long term pain factor between healing bones naturally and having surgery. That was pretty discouraging.

Hi Linda S! I had Vertebroplasty, cement put into fracture, but no balloon used like in Kyphoplasty. Unfortunately was nearly nine months after fracture had happened so no improvement in pain level.
