Forteo
A MyOsteoTeam Member asked a question 💭

I fractured my femur bone, had surgery to implant titanium rods, and took a long time to recover. My diagnosis is Osteoporosis. I take Tums for calcium. I wonder why I wasn’t prescribed something like Forteo. I was told that my condition usually worsens, and I am high risk for more fractures.

Has anyone else been prescribed only Tums?

Tums sound ridiculous for osteoporosis! I should ask to see a consultant Orthopaedic specialist asap. You probably should take VIT D3, also VIT K2,collagen and magnesium.
Maybe a Specialist might suggest an infusion yearly, or weekly tablets, both are for bone strengthening.
Good luck.

If your break was from Osteoporosis I think you should be on Prolia or Forteo. You might want to check with another doctor. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoporosis. My Rheumatologist was apparently not taking my osteoporosis seriously enough. When i had my second leg fracture the orthopedic surgeon sent me to a endocrinologist who let me know how severe mine was. I love my rheumatologist he's fantastic at treating RA and he cares about my health. I think some doctors are not aware of how quickly it can progress and many aren't familiar enough with the medications, or they make a mistake. Just keep it in mind because tums isn't a good treatment for osteoporosis.

HRT may not be advisable if you've had cancer.
Tums is not much more than chalk. It isn't easily absorbed by the bones. So, no, it isn't the best form of calcium for osteoporosis. From what I have heard, calcium citrate accompanied by Vitamin D3 is preferable.
You need to speak with another doctor who is more knowledgable about osteoporosis.
Take care. Good luck.

Only Tums? Nope. That doesn't seem enough, especially if you're at high risk for fractures, LadyElisa. Just my opinion. Could it be an oversight?
Tums isn't even the correct form of calcium. Tums is/are calcium carbonate. You need calcium citrate. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.
