Overview
Binosto is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis. It is typically prescribed to people at high risk of bone fractures due to low bone density. Binosto is also known by its drug name, alendronate sodium.

Binosto belongs to a class of drugs known as bisphosphonates. It works by slowing down the rate at which bone is broken down, which helps to maintain or increase bone density and reduce the risk of fractures.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Binosto is taken once weekly as an effervescent tablet dissolved in plain room temperature water. Typically, a person should dissolve a tablet in approximately 4 ounces of water, wait at least five minutes after the bubbling stops, stir for about 10 seconds, and then drink the entire solution. The medication should be taken at least 30 minutes before the first food, drink, or medication of the day. After taking Binosto, individuals should remain upright for at least 30 minutes and until after they eat. Binosto should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Side effects
Common side effects of Binosto include abdominal (belly) pain, acid regurgitation (acid reflux), constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia (indigestion), musculoskeletal pain, and nausea.

Rare but serious side effects may include irritation or damage to the esophagus, hypocalcemia (low calcium levels in the blood), severe bone, joint, or muscle pain, osteonecrosis of the jaw (jaw bone damage), and atypical femur fractures (unusual thigh bone fractures). Binosto also contains a high amount of sodium, which may require caution in people on sodium-restricted diets.
