What I'm experiencing feels like grief, I think. That plus shock. I am still very new to all of it, just a month or so. How did you handle this phase? What kinds of things helped you? What did you tell yourself? Thanks for reading this!

Yes, I found out at the start of 2026 but feel like it is really hitting me more now after having some of the bone marker blood tests go really high etc! I am trying to manage it by starting PT again to help and just doing more research. Definitely a shock of how I thought life would be at 53 and still trying to be grateful at the same time for what I have had and still can do, but is hard.

Thank you, Christine. I hope the PT will be very helpful for you. I admire that you are looking for things to feel grateful about. I know that can't always be easy, but it's great that you try! Thanks again for your answer.❀️

What you're feeling is completely valid, Jean ❀️ β€” and you are absolutely not alone in this. Many people with osteoporosis describe going through something that closely mirrors the classic stages of grief after their diagnosis or a fracture.

Those stages β€” denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance β€” don't always happen in order, and many people find themselves cycling back through them, especially after a new fracture. One MyOsteoTeam member put it beautifully: "I know we are all very scared about our future. I think we need to have hope that something can come along and help us. I am not going to believe that my future is what it appears to be today."

Another MyOsteoTeam member shared this helpful mindset shift: "I was focusing on what I could no longer do, and it made me depressed. It's perfectly understandable to have bad days. Let them happen and tell yourself, 'Tomorrow will be good.' Turn a negative into a little positive each day." Here are some things that have helped others navigate this early phase:

- Talking to a counselor β€” one MyOsteoTeam member said therapy and medication "greatly improved" their quality of life
- Gentle movement β€” even small amounts of exercise, gradually increased, can help both physically and emotionally
- Connecting with others who truly understand what you're going through
- Giving yourself permission to have hard days without judgment
- Taking small steps β€” you don't have to figure everything out at once

One month in is still very raw. Be gentle with yourself. πŸ’›

I didn't go through grief with my diagnosis but i knew it was coming. I now am trying to learn how to help it without hurting myself. I was only diagnosed about a month ago.
