Alendronate Or Alendronic Acid Has Anyone Found That This Medication Exacerbates Existing Arthritis Joint Pain?

A MyOsteoTeam Member asked a question 💭
Atlanta, GA

I am starting to suspect that flaring of my existing arthritis joint pain is connected with my use of this medication. It began a few weeks into my use of weekly generic Fosamax, and flares up anew each time i take another weekly dose.

Members discussed whether Alendronate (Fosamax) worsens arthritis pain, with several sharing that they experienced increased joint pain and flare-ups lasting three to four days after each weekly dose, while one member reported no side effects and successful bone stabilization after more than a year of use. Several members described practical strategies, including trying a lower 35mg weekly dose, switching to calcium supplements like Algaecal with improved diet, and for one member, finding that the initial pain lessened significantly over seven months of continued use. A recurring theme was the difficult choice between tolerating medication side effects versus risking serious fractures, with members offering each other understanding, faith, hope, and encouragement to find what works best for their individual situations.

I have osteoarthritis as well as osteopenia. I have been on Fosamax for more than a year, no side effects and has stabled my bones, since I was losing bone density quickly and it has almost stopped. I eat healthy, walk every day, do an hour of cardio and I do weights every other day., no preservatives, I take vitamins and supplements, but I always have, but still was still losing bone, so at least Fosamax has helped, but we are all different and medication effects us all differently.
I wish you well, awful to have pain.

I'm in agreement that it brings pain, a different kind of pain so that indicates to me it is the medication. I have not gone back on it for that reason among others. I'm going to try Algaecal and force myself to eat better for now. Hope it works!!

Hi Shirley! Have been wondering how you are doing. I sure hope okay. I also had arthritic flare-ups after weekly dosage for about 3 or 4 days. I am not currently taking it because of other issues affecting my back. I know I should take it but right now I can't deal with more pain. It's darned if you do, darned if you don't! Take good care and keep on touch!

@A MyOsteoTeam Member Thank you Vivian. I am also very unsure, but decided to take the medicine after reading the stories of other women, some quite young, who exoerienced fractures of their vertebrae. The pain and life changes connected to that possibility were very frightening to me too. I pray for us all! Bless you!🥰

Hello, I’m Vivian. I was prescribed alendronate sodium after ny diagnosis. After I researched the side effects on every medicine that’s used to treat osteoporosis, I refuse to take any of those drugs due to Severe side affects. I have placed my diagnosis in God’s hands! Tell who wants to live with pain for years while taking these drugs?
