Osteopenia. Exercise Program In Lieu Of Prolia. Does It Work?

A MyOsteoTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have osteopenia and was prescribed Prolia. Decided to seek another opinion and referred to an exercise physiologist. Undertaking exercise program In an attempt to stop progression. Has anyone else tried this and how successful was it?

Members shared mixed experiences when asked whether exercise alone could successfully manage osteopenia instead of medications like Prolia. Several members reported positive outcomes, with one reversing osteopenia to normal through walking and dancing, and another achieving normal results by increasing daily walking after diagnosis. Many others described trying exercise programs for years without improvement in bone density numbers, ultimately needing medications like Prolia or Actonel when their scans worsened, though they emphasized that exercise still helps with balance, strength, and overall mobility even if the numbers don't reflect it.

Yes, Lorraine, i did. I was diagnosed with osteopenia and immediately increased my daily walking which is obviously a weight bearing exercise. The result of my next DEXA scan was normal. Really.

I take the prolia shot every 6 months for 3 years now one more year and Dr said they would look into me taking reclast. A new study she is looking at. I also go to the YMCA 5 days a week and dance low impact 3 of those days with lifting some weights. Zumba on Wed. thurs glider. I am pretty sure with the Prolia shot and doing this is why my numbers improved significantly.

Hi Lorraine, I have posted before that with walking and line and ceilidh dancing I reversed my osteopaena to normal. However, because of pain in knee I have gone back into the osteopaena category again thru lack of walking. Very worried for next bone density scan that I may have slipped further. I have never taken anything other than calcium, vit d, k2 and magnesium. Good luck to u.

I tried exercise first for many years. But my last Bonedensity was much worse so now I am taking Actonel. I also continue my walks and exercises from physiotherapist.
