In the last 2.5yrs I have had 3 really serious bone breaks with on-going pain and issues
The first few were from tripping/falling and the last was from falling off a young horse
Does anyone on here with Osteoporosis still ride horses?
I have been told not to ride. I understand why riding a just-started horse is a high risk.
But I am still hoping to be able to ride my older mare subject to my pain levels, newly acquired anxiety and fear of falling.
I am 51 and was hoping to keep riding until I… read more
We have some similarities. I too was diagnosed after hysterectomy (after uterine cancer) but had an abnormal dexa scan previously and wasn't given the results. I also had a leg fracture and foot fracture and spinal stenosis and was told to stop all weight-bearing exercise: walking, jogging, hiking. Ok, I wasn't much of a jogger. However, I had to resign as a nurse because of the constant pain and 12-hour shifts. I developed anxiety, depression, and fear of falling as you did. I had to accept that the life I had planned in retirement just was not going to happen. It was a long and painful grieving process, still ongoing some days. I use my judgment and do what my pain allows, swimming and walking. I just cannot give up my long walks! I also volunteer with hospice so I don't miss my patients so much.
You should do what you feel safe doing. If you can find a safe way to ride your old mare. certainly, hold on to her. You are just beginning this process. Don't throw everything out at once! You will get through your anger at the unfairness of it all and find a way to deal with it and hopefully something new and positive.
Praying for you.
Oh Sandy, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope it heals quickly.
Please note: I have only been diagnosed with Osteoporosis this month.
Rode my mare for the first time in months last week (while no one was around to growl). Cracked my sacrum again. Sigh.
