Medicine Side Effects

A MyOsteoTeam Member asked a question 💭

My doctor is telling me I need to go on meds for my Osteo. My Son, who is in the dental field, is telling me that all of these meds affect your gums and teeth; sometimes making dental procedures more risky and harder. I don't want this. What are your experiences and what meds do you recommend. And what natural things can I do.

Members shared deeply conflicting experiences with osteoporosis medications, particularly around dental risks, with some reporting stable teeth and gums on drugs like Prolia and Reclast, while others shared stories of friends or family members losing teeth or experiencing jawbone necrosis on medications like Fosamax. Several members described their disappointment with prescription treatments, including one who saw no improvement after 730 Forteo injections and another whose bone density actually decreased by 20% on Forteo, leading many to pursue natural alternatives like high-dose vitamin D3, calcium, magnesium, and exercise instead. A recurring theme was frustration over limited information from doctors about serious risks, including the warning that stopping Prolia can cause a severe bone density drop and increased fracture risk for up to 18 months, leaving members caught between fear of fractures and fear of medication side effects.

I am now trying a Rx supplement called FosteumPlus which a naturopath prescribed for me. I am hoping it is better than the OTC supplements. I was very disappointed to get no gains in bone density from 2 years on Forteo. 730 injections and no improvement. At least I didn't have to pay for it! I really don' think any of the usual osteo drugs have that great of long term success rate so my feeling is why risk the side effects. I know if you ever stop Prolia, there is a massive drop in bone density for up to 18 mos after stopping, and the Proilia website warns of this (I read the part meant for physicians) it says you are at even greater fracture risk than before treatment, including spine fractures. Someone on this site reported spine fracs after stopping Prolia. So if you stop Prolia you must immediately get on something else. Doctors don't mention this! At least mine didn't and I bet few do.

These drugs are really a crap shoot! I had no gains from Forteo. Someone said had density decrease with forteo. Others have gains. A friend of mine had "small gains" after 5 yrs on Prolia. I've yet to hear/see proof of long term major bone improvement............. I've posted before that a friend of mine who worked in medical field tracked patient results of these bone drugs and said she saw very few successful results. I'm not at all convinced they do a lot of good. The only reason I agreed to Forteo is that it's not a bisphosphonate and therefore didn't carry the side effects like necrosis of jaw, gastro issues, reflux etc. Of course the bone cancer warning was scary, but Lily told me there have been no cases of humans developing bone cancer from forteo.

Yes, it doesn't really build bone, but creates a condition where your bones don't remove old bone material as they normally do, so you are left with denser bones due to build up of old bone material which in time is brittle as its basically dead bone. Forteo is the only med that can build new bone material.

My dentist also said that if I ever needed dental surgery the bone built from meds was a big problem.

Kayoko, I am not taking prescriptions meds, I had -2.5 in hip area and osteopenia in neck area. Last scan shows that I am stable , have not gotten in worse since diagnosed just from vitamin D3, 50,000 IU once a week, calcium zinc and magnesium. I changed over to Algaecal which had D2, k, boron and magnesium and I still take D2 to see if I improve.
