Members discussed their varied experiences with alendronic acid (Fosamax), with most confirming that five years is the standard maximum duration recommended by doctors due to concerns about bones becoming too brittle or breaking, though some shared they had been on it longer with mixed results on bone density. Several members mentioned alternative or complementary approaches they're exploring, including sesame seeds for calcium (though many expressed skepticism about whether a teaspoon daily is sufficient), weight-bearing exercise, gym workouts, Nordic walking, and calcium with vitamin D supplements. A recurring theme was the fear and frustration around medication side effects, with some members reporting severe illness, sight problems, or having to stop treatment entirely, while others found reassurance in improved DEXA scan results and the ability to take a medication holiday after five years while maintaining exercise routines.

I am taking calcium and vitamin D, with Alendronic acid. I have also started mixing sesame seeds with food, and more green veg.

My Doctor said after 5 years on Alendronate, I had some measurable improvement, so I could have a two year ‘holiday’, but whilst doing this I am still on Calci-Chew daily, and still do weight bearing exercise three times a week minimum. No bone breaks for me in the last 5 years although I know my dexa scores in my hips are pretty low.
Those of you who have experienced vertebral breaks - how did you know, was it sudden pain?

I do not take calcium or alondrolic anymore, a nurse told me a teaspoon of sesame seeds a day is enough calcium, also jelly and of course sunshine

I was diagnosed two years ago. I was put on calcium and alendronic acid. After many month I started to feel very ill and had sight problems. I was fast tracked for a brain scan. Nothing wrong. I took myself off the alendronic acid and I got well. I now go to a gym regularly in the hope that this is helping. My doctor was going back to the Consultant to discuss other treatments but I have heard nothing. I am reluctant to go back as I fear medication now after being so ill. I will keep going with the calcium and watch the diet but I am scared. Anyone had the same experience?
